Dates: 4th May to 11th May 2019

Skye is one of the top locations in Scotland to visit for its spectacular hiking, stunning scenery and landscapes that will take your breath away. During this spectacular Skye hiking week we will aim to visit all the highlights of this amazing island.

During our trekking week, we cover hiking trails from the North to the South, a Cuillin summit, the Quiraing, visit the famous Fairy Pools, the Old Man of Storr, hike the whole of the famous Trotternish Ridge and visit the glorious Camasunary Bay. We also stay at the Sligachan bunkhouse which is ideally placed for the famous bar at the ‘Slig’.

The Island has a rich history and is a great destination for Wildlife with the White Tailed Sea Eagle at the top of bird watchers lists. Otters, seals, whales, dolphins and red deer are just some of the other impressive creatures that can be seen on and around the Isle of Skye.

This is a challenging and strenuous hiking week but equally rewarding in terms of mountain views, scenery and experiences in Skye.  Suitable for experienced, fit hill and mountain walkers.

On some days we will use local minibus transfers to the start or finish of our walks and the overall price is inclusive of these transfers.

Description

This Skye Hiking Week will fully explore this world class destination for walkers and climbers. The Island of Skye is 50 miles long and the largest of the Inner Hebrides and the capital is Portree. The Cuillin mountain range and ‘The Trotternish Ridge’ offer mountain hiking routes the equal of anywhere in the world. The Cuillin Range itself offers 12 Munros – peaks above 3000ft (914m) and is the most stunning mountain skyline in the UK.

During this spectacular Skye hiking week we will aim to visit all the highlights of this amazing island.  We will be hiking from the north of the island to the South during the week and spending a few days exploring the Cuillin, fairy pools and Quiraing.

Our accommodation for the Skye hiking week will be in two main hostels in the north and center of the island, plus one last night in the South of Skye.  We will therefore be staying in the SYHA the village of Portree towards the north and the famous Sligachan in the middle of the island close to the stunning Cuillin mountains.  The last night we will be staying at Broadford near the south end of the island.  This gives us the opportunity to fully explore the major highlights of this Scottish island gem and get a real feel for the history and culture as well as great hiking.

For the first three nights we will be based at a hostel in Portree, which will give us access to the facilities and many of the great pubs in the village.

Skye hiking week Portree

We will be using this as a base to hike and explore the northern part of the island during the first part of the Skye hiking week.  This will include hiking sections of the Skye trail which takes us through the stunning landscape of the Quiraing and to the Old man of Storr.

We will then transfer to the Sligachan Inn bunkhouse for the next three nights, which we have on sole use.  From here we can hike to the Fairy Pools and explore close up the famous Cuillin ridge.  The Sligachan Inn is also famous for its Scottish hospitality, great atmosphere and its huge range of Scottish Whiskies and local beers.

The final leg of our Skye hiking week then takes us southwards and we finish at Broadford hostel with views of the sea and glorious coast in the south.

Arran Hiking Break – September 2017

This will be a strenuous and challenging hiking week and you should only join if you are an experienced and fit hiker.  Some days we will be hiking over rough moorland with indistinct paths with significant ascent and descent.  We will also hike to one of the summits on the famous Cuillin ridge which gives us stunning views of the whole of the island.  The weather can also be very challenging on Skye, a combination of wind and heavy rain can make hiking very difficult so you need to have the right clothing and mindset and of course waterproof boots

05/05 – Hike from Storr to Portree (8.75 miles, 500m ascent)
In the morning we get a minibus transfer to Storr then hike southwards back to Portree, with stunning views of the coast sea cliffs and mountains.

Note: This is a tough days hiking, but one of the most spectacular ridge hikes in the UK.

This is a more relaxing day and we can take a lower level scenic hike along the coast from Portree, then visit the village of Braes, before our final leg along the coast of Loch Sligachan.

Skye Hiking week - Day 3

Thursday 09/05 – Summit hike from Sligachan (7.5 miles, 980m ascent)
Today we will hike a circuit of the northern Red Hills taking in two summits which give amazing views of the Cuillin mountains, sea and out to the other islands.  This is not a long hike in terms of distance, but there are sections of steep ascent and descent.  It is another spectacular day though with amazing views.

Skye Hiking Week - Day 5

Friday 10/05 – Hike from Sligachan to Elgol, then bus to Broadford (11.25miles, 510 ascent)
