Our latest Helvellyn hiking group all managed the climb to the summit of the third highest mountain in England on Saturday, despite rather misty and wet conditions.
Sunday we again climbed up through mist to Red Tarn, and then descended into Grisedale for great views of the valley and mountains, before walking around Ullswater. We based ourselves at the Helvellyn Hostel, which is not the smartest hostel we stay at but is full of character and has a great alpine feel to it.
Sadly the views were not as great as we hoped as we emerged from the hostel on Saturday and hiked up Whiteside towards Helvellyn, but we managed small glimpses of the scenery through parting clouds every now and then.
We escaped the cloud as we approached Grisedale Tarn for a very pleasant lunch stop overlooking the small mountain lake.
The weather improved significantly as we descended through the lovely valley of Grisedale surrounded by towering summits and accompanied by tumbling waterfalls and streams.
At the bottom of the valley we headed around the shoulder of Birkhouse Moor for some great views of the village of Glenridding and Ullswater.
Sunday we had hoped to hike up onto Striding Edge for an exciting morning of Scrambling, but sadly were met with more low cloud and mist as we approached Red Tarn.
So we aborted that plan and instead headed down out of the mist and towards the village of Patterdale and Ullswater.
As we headed around the lake the views and weather improved and we had some lovely afternoon sunshine.
We found a great lunch stop to enjoy the view and the afternoon sunshine.
Ching practised her headstand.
And Babak practiced his posing.
We returned to the hostel for a quick change, shower and relax with plenty of Yen’s gorgeous home made tea and cake before departing.
These are just a few of the many wonderful comments we had after the trip:
I’m not one for leaving feedback unless I’m seriously impressed! This was a fantastic weekend organised superbly by the very lovely and professional Kevin and Yen. A great bunch of fellow walkers too! Can’t recommend Mountain Hikes and Yoga Group highly enough! Looking forward to my next weekend in a few weeks (and Yen’s home baked cakes which are to die for!)
Fab Weekend. Can’t agree enough with Paul’s comments. Great company, great leadership, great venue. Do it or your missing out big time.
Thanks Kevin and Yen for an excellent trip in the beautiful Lakes! Inspiring, relaxing and fun.
Thanks Yen and Kevin for yet another well organised and fun weekend away in the mystical and changeable Lakes!
